Rainstorm Wreaks Havoc On School Building And Residents At Wassa Ahyireso

A three-unit classroom block at Wassa Ahyireso, a community near Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality (WAEMA) of the Western Region has been ripped off following a recent heavy rainstorm.

The incident which happened last Thursday night ripped off the roof of Wassa Ahyireso M/A Basic School affecting classes one, two and three and two Teachers Quarters, as well as  rendering several others in the community homeless.

Most residents in the community were also severely affected as their roofs were ripped off destroying lots of properties.

Among the affected structures in the community were the Elim Pentecostal Church and the Apostolic Church Ghana which were severely affected as their roofs were ripped off.

The Assembly Member for the Area, Mr Degor Banabas who visited the affected communities was saddened by the event and empathised with the affected residents.

He told Spice News that he has informed the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Helena Appiah, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Directorate and other authorities in the District for the appropriate measures to be taken.

When contacted, Madam Helena Appiah, District Chief Executive (DCE) for WAEDA told our reporter that she was yet to receive an official report from the Assembly Member for the Area.

She said though she has sent some team to visit the affected school and give their recommendations, she could not act on it until she had received an official report from the Assembly Member to take the necessary action per the Assembly structure of operations.

She bemoaned that her hands were tied since her tenure in office had elapsed and that she was only a caretaker and could not take certain decisions.

Meanwhile, NADMO officials in the District have visited the community to ascertain the degree of impact and have reported to the Regional Directorate pending recommendations and action to be taken.
