(Video added): Last Thursday’s Rain Causes Havoc in Takoradi and its Environs

A heavy downpour yesterday in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (STMA) and the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality (EKMA) in the Western Region resulted in massive flooding on various streets and areas.

Among the areas that were greatly affected are the entire Central Business District (CBD) in Takoradi, Essikafo-Ambantem No. 1 and 2, Mankessim White House area, Adakope, Kokompe, Takoradi Airport road, Ekuase near Sekondi, Anaji and other low levelled areas.

The rains which lasted a little over two (2) hours blocked a lot of asphalted roads in the Metropolis as trees along some of the roads fell on the roads making them in accessible to both private and commercial drivers.

Fleets of cars were seen drowning in areas like Essikafo-Ambantem No. 2 as vehicle owners struggled to remove them to safer places while some of these cars were damaged as water entered into the engines.

Residents in some of these areas including school children, shoppers, hawkers and traders had it difficult to access the street or move from one point to the other whereas drivers who tried to drive their way through struggled to identify the right lanes.

Drains were filled with water overflowing its banks which rushed into households, stores and apartments damaging properties even though no life was reportedly lost at the moment.

Spice News gathered that the Takoradi Market Circle is well known for its poor drainage systems as small gutters in the enclave often choked with rubbish being the main cause of flooding.

Spice News checks at the Ministry of Works and Housing reveals that plans are underway to solve the perennial flooding problem in the enclave.

The source disclosed that a section has been awarded for construction and the contractor will soon take possession of site for work to begin.
