The Medea Company limited and partners have technically handed a mechanised bore hole estimated at GH₵ 94,375.80 to to Funko M.A Junior High School yesterday in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region as part of its first Cooperate social responsibility since it commenced exploration at the East Cape Three point offshore.
The initiative was necessitated by a project need assessment across most of fishing communities in the company’s enclave.
Funko M.A Junior High School was identified as one of the schools that lacked portable water to facilitate smooth running of the day to day activities of the school therefore the need for the immediate intervention.
Nana Tuffour Antwi, head of supply chain and logistics at Medea Company limited who lead the delegation shared with beachfmonline the significance of investing in the Funko M.A basic Community school.
“Before we started the project we conducted a need assessment across most of the fishing communities. We identified that accessibility to portable water at the Funko basic school was a major challenge for academic work. This necessitated our decision to build a mechanized borehole embedded with a water treating plant to provide quality water to enhance the schools’ access to water to also improve teaching and learning.
According to him, the technical handing over of the project to the school was significant to ensure that the school will have access to portable water amid COVID-19 as the company awaits appropriate time for the official commissioning.
“Though the project commenced last year but due to the advent of COVID-19, the project came to halt, today’s event is a technical handover to enable the school to have access to the portable water. The official commissioning is expected to take place at a later date”.
Maintenance
There is a maintenance agreement between the head of the school and the contractor where the contractor will maintain the facility for the school in the next 6months for free. The facility uses three filters at cost of 10 Ghana Cedis each every three week therefore we expect the school to be able to maintain the facility Nana Tuffour Antwi empasised
The Headmaster of Funko M.A Junior High School, Jacob Kweku Mensah, who received the project on behalf of the school shared his profound gratitude to Medea foundation, GNPC and other stakeholders for the collaboration that has manifested such a monumental facility which is expected to solve the school’s long standing water challenge. He promises to maintain the best maintenance culture to prolong the live of the facility.
“We will protect the facility to ensure that we maximize its benefit. We are also ready to sit with the contractor to plan a maintenance schedule to ensure that we do everything in our power to prolong the life of the project”
The project has solely been handed to the management of the school to ensure effective management and eschew conflict of interest and ownership.
The project will also serve both the Funko M.A Primary and Junior High School school for free with the surrounding communities expected to pay something meaningful and moderate for the water supply.
