Former Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama of Fiji has been sentenced to a year in prison for impeding a police investigation into corruption.
Bainimarama, 70, served as Fiji’s leader for over 15 years until his defeat in 2022. He was also known internationally for his advocacy on climate change issues affecting Pacific nations.
Following the High Court’s ruling, Bainimarama was taken into custody in handcuffs.
His conviction stemmed from allegations that he interfered with a 2020 police inquiry into financial misconduct at the University of South Pacific, including claims of irregular bonuses, promotions, and salary increases for staff.
Despite pleading not guilty, Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho were found by a court in April to have abused their authority to halt the university investigation.
Initially avoiding jail time with an unrecorded conviction, this decision was overturned on appeal by Fiji’s top prosecutors, resulting in prison sentences for both men.
Outside the court, Bainimarama’s supporters sang hymns while political figures praised the verdict, emphasizing accountability regardless of one’s status.
Observers noted the timing of these legal challenges coinciding with Bainimarama’s loss in the 2022 elections to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who leads a coalition government.
Despite these legal setbacks, Bainimarama’s political party FijiFirst reaffirmed its support for him, indicating he would remain the party’s leader.
Bainimarama, a former military leader who initially took power in a 2006 coup, faced suspension from parliament last year after criticizing the new government, highlighting ongoing political tensions in Fiji.
