‘So Me Mu’ Mentorship Program To Support Females In Male-Domanitated Sectors and Skills Training (INVEST)

The World University Service of Canada (WUSC), through the innovation in Non- Traditional Vocational Education and Skill Training (Invest) has launched the “So Me Mu” Mentorship Program in Takoradi.

The Program seeks to support young women in male-dominated TVET sectors with Technical Professionals in sectors such as energy, extractive, and construction for mentorship, guidance, and support.

It is expected to use mentorship workshops and networking to expand the horizon of participants to acquire knowledge and place value on skills acquired by participants.

Speaking at the event Juliana Ohenewaa  Amoako- Twum, Public Engagement and Advocacy Advisor Innovation in Non-Traditional Vocational Education and Skill Training Training Project INVEST Project shared the essence of the program.

” We are advocating and campaigning for women’s participation in male-dominated trade areas, we’ve realised that our findings that, that sector is lucrative, rewarding with market relevance, and demand skills. Unfortunately, we have a lot of barriers including our social norms, cultural beliefs, gender roles and negative perception that have been inhibiting the entry of women into such spaces,”

” However, we think that we can do something in terms of engaging all stakeholders to understand that it’s about time, we give women the chance and opportunity to explore what they can do in the spaces,” Juliana Ohenewaa Amoako- Twum said.

According to her, the program will also allow trainees to mentor young trainees to enhance their careers through first-hand information.

Reacting to the teeming young unemployed youth which has been re-echoed with the recent data from Ghana Statistical Service, GSS which says in the third quarter of 2022, 1.5 million Ghanaian youth between the ages of 15 and 25 years have no education nor training.

Fred Odei, Service Manager of Quansah Company Limited, stated that the situation is worrying and called on all stakeholders to intervene.
