National Roads Safety Advocate, Nana Annor Amihere lauds Beach FM for it “Eyes On The Road” project
Statistics from the Roads Safety Commission has shown that many people continue to lose their lives through road accident in Ghana.
In 2016 alone, 2,980 people were killed on our roads whiles 15,000 were maimed through roads accidents.
Speaking at the maiden outdoor event of the “Eyes On The Road” project by Beach 105.5 FM at the Tarkwa main lorry station behind the Central Mosque in Takoradi yesterday 5th, December 2017.
The National President of the Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GHISEP) who doubles as the Chairman of Roads Safety Advocates Ghana (ROSAG) who is also the Mendimase of Aiyinasi/Basake in the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, Nana Annor Amihere lauded Beach FM for it road safety campaign initiative which tagged “Eyes On The Road”, to support the National Roads Safety Commission in its quest to drum home the need to ensure safety on our roads at all times.
According to Nana Annor Amihere, road crashes could be forestalled if one has the ability to perceive the hazards. This he said will prevent the accident from happening but many Ghanaian drivers he said lacks the ability to perceive the hazards on our roads on which they drive.
He said, there is an urgent need to educate road users specially, commercial transport operators for them to be aware of all the hazards on the road.
As a road safety advocate, Nana Annor Amihere mentioned that his outfit is working hard to bring hazard perception skills to the doorstep of all commercial transport operators because he believes, “when they are able to perceive the hazards on our roads they can avoid many of the road crash we see around us.”
He cautioned Ghanaians to embrace safety in all their endeavour especially when they are on the road as drivers or pedestrian.
The National Roads Safety advocate, Nana Annor Amihere, however called on the president, Nana Addo to keep a close eye on the road safety commission and resource them to do their work since they play a key role in ensuring that both motorist and other road users are safe on the road. This he said cloud only be achieved through constant education and advocacy on road safety issues.
“If we are going to spend our resources on educating ourselves through the Free SHS programme, then we cannot afford to lose 2,980 of our human resource through road accidents. This should be a thing of the past and the President should lead this fight by bringing the roads safety commission to his watch at the flag staff house.”
Meanwhile, this is the second edition of the “Eyes On The Road” campaign initiated by Beach 105.5 FM with major stakeholders like the Roads Safety Commission, DVLA, Police MTTD, Ghana National Fire Service, Narcotic’s Control Board, GPRTU and NADMO.
According to the Programmes Manager of the Beach FM, Mr. Agyekum Gyimah has noted that the flagship road safety campaign dubbed “Eyes On The Road” will be running throughout the month of December with roadshows and studio discussions from all the stakeholders in the transport industry.
