Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah has revealed that his target was to “try and qualify the Black Stars for the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia”.
This comes on the back of many Ghanaians referring him, Kwesi Appiah as a failure since he could not qualify the senior national team for Russia 2018.
Coach Kwesi Appiah was speaking to pressmen at the post match conference of Ghana’s last world cup qualifier with Egypt at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, yesterday, Sunday, 12th November, 2017.
Kwesi Appiah was re-appointed as the head coach of the Ghana national team in April, replacing former Chelsea manager, Avram Grant who had overseen two games in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The Israeli trainer lost to Egypt in Alexandria and drew against Uganda at the Tamale Sports Stadium.
Coach Kwesi Appiah took over with the Black Stars lying third in Group E with a solitary point from two games, five point behind leaders, Egypt.
Under the Kwesi Appiah’s watch the Black Stars played four games, won one and drew three, against Congo Brazzaville, the Cranes of Uganda and the Pharaohs of Egypt respectively.
At the post match media conference after Sunday’s stalemate against Egypt, Appiah said his target is to build a team formidable enough to launch an assault on the Afcon trophy in Cameroon in 2019
“When I was signed, the target that was given to me was to try and qualify and that was exactly what I did, I tried to qualify but the essence of it is to make sure we build a winsome side for AFCON 2019”.
Ghana finished the World Cup Qualifying campaign with 7 points ending hopes of becoming the first African country to qualify for four consecutive World Cups after Cameroon, between 1990 and 2002.
