Ghana Recycling Initiative Collaborates With Private Enterprises To Commission BuyPack Collection Center At Effiakuma

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) through the Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises (GRIPE) has commissioned the community plastics buyback centre at Effiakuma, a suburb of Takoradi.

The project which is being managed by ‘Asa Nwura’ seeks to create values and green jobs for local communities through plastic waste collection, sorting, sale, recycling and upcycling.

This will enhance the recovery of plastic waste through incentive-based modules aimed at tackling land-based litter in vicinity and towns, particularly those around waterways.

The Chief Executive of AGI Seth Twum Akwaboah explains that GRIPE comprises members of AGI that use plastic in packaging.

Mr Akwaboah called on stakeholders such as the MMDAs and manufacturers of plastics to emulate their initiative and help rid the country of indiscriminate disposal of plastics.

“The essence of establishing this buypack center here is to create a space and an opportunity for members of the community to bring their waste here. The whole idea is to clear the street , and gutters off the plastic menace.

Plastic has become major challenge in Ghana. The companies that are using the plastics as their packaging materials have expressed concern over this issue, therefore they have come together under the umbrella of AGI to set up an organization known as GRIPE Project.

This project is to look at various ways of helping to collect plastics from the system. Some of the buy bat centres are in Accra, Kumasi and today we have come to establish some here in Takoradi,” He remarked.
