Works and Housing Ministry To Evaluate Housing Program To Solve Deficit

The government’s commitment to addressing the housing shortage in the country and providing quality accommodation for public sector workers has been emphasized by the Ministry of Works and Housing.

According to the Ministry, the government is diligently working to bridge the housing gap and has plans to initiate two major projects as part of the revised affordable housing scheme in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions.

Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Sector Minister, highlighted the government’s dedication to resolving the housing shortage issue in the country.

A new and improved affordable housing program is in the pipeline, which aims to support private sector developers and the State Housing Company Limited (SHC) in constructing houses at reduced prices. The government will assist private developers by providing serviced lands for the construction of horizontal buildings, thereby reducing construction costs by up to 40 percent.

Under this revised scheme, the government intends to enable developers to construct and sell affordable houses to approximately 60 percent of public sector workers who require suitable accommodation for themselves and their families.

Furthermore, the Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, explained that the revised scheme will first be implemented in Pokuase, located in the Greater Accra Region, and Dedeso, in the Ashanti Region.

The projects will commence after completing the necessary legal procedures, and the President will soon inaugurate them. These two blocks will be named after Samuel Osei and Alfred Odoom Fynn, two long-serving staff members of the State Housing Company Limited who dedicated more than 30 years of service to the company.

The Minister acknowledged that in order to provide the affordable housing that Ghanaians require, the government must play a significant role in the process.
