OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman is set to return to his position after being ousted by the board, with an agreement “in principle” for his reinstatement, including new board appointments, and a focus on strengthening the partnership with Microsoft.
Altman expressed eagerness to rejoin OpenAI, stating, “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done has been to keep this team and its mission together.”
The initial decision to remove Altman, leading to co-founder Greg Brockman’s resignation, caused upheaval within the company, but a recent shift in dynamics occurred when Ilya Sutskever, the firm’s chief scientist, apologized and supported the staff’s plea to reverse Altman’s dismissal.
Microsoft stepped in, offering Altman a leadership role in an advanced AI research team. Now, with the latest developments, OpenAI plans to reinstate Altman and partially reconfigure its board, with new additions like Bret Taylor and Larry Summers.
