The Nigerian film industry has suffered another devastating loss with the passing of veteran actress Cynthia Okereke. Cynthia Okereke, aged 63, was tragically kidnapped by unidentified individuals a year ago and passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, leaving the entertainment industry and her fans in deep mourning.

Actor and filmmaker Joseph Okechukwu took to Instagram on Wednesday to share the heart-wrenching news. He expressed his profound sadness and shock at the untimely demise of Cynthia Okereke in a heartfelt tribute. Okechukwu posted a picture of the late actress and lamented the fact that he was just finalizing travel arrangements for her to join him in completing a project they had started together.

The news of her passing has been one of the most difficult challenges Okechukwu has faced recently, as he expressed in his post. He wrote, “REST IN PEACE, Nwanyi oma (beautiful woman). I’m shattered beyond words. The fact that I was about to pay for your flight ticket to come and finish what we started, only to hear that you went to be with the Lord just last night, is one of the toughest things I’ve had to deal with in recent times.”

Okechukwu described Cynthia Okereke as an extraordinary person whom he had known for over two decades. He expressed his hope to recover from the shock and acknowledged the fleeting nature of life. He added, “May your gentle soul rest on till we meet again in glory.”

Nearly a year ago, Cynthia Okereke, along with her colleague Clemson Cornell (also known as Agbogidi), endured a horrifying kidnapping ordeal while working in Enugu State, Nigeria. After their release, Okereke courageously spoke about the traumatic experience, sharing the challenges she faced during her week-long captivity, including deprivation of food and water.

Cynthia Okereke’s passing is a significant loss for the Nigerian film industry. She had made a name for herself in Nollywood through notable roles in movies such as “Prof John Bull,” “Osuofia In London,” and “A Fool at 40,” among others.
