The question of whether Elon Musk should resign as Twitter’s CEO was put to his 122 million followers in a poll that was started on Sunday, December 18 by billionaire Elon Musk himself, who also said that he would abide by the poll’s results.

A total of 57.5 percent of the 17.5 million votes cast on Twitter were in favor, while 42.5 percent chose the “No” option.

Elon Musk also Tweeted then, “Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. My apologies. Won’t happen again. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.”

The poll’s results are timely given that Musk’s activities after the company’s acquisition, including the firing of key executives, changing company policies and ongoing banning of unfavorable accounts have caused Twitter to have some difficulties.

Proir to this year’s polls, Musk had conducted Twitter polls and obeyed its results in November 2021 when he asked Twitter followers about offloading 10 percent of his Tesla stake. With majority voting ‘Yes,’ Musk sold certain Tesla stock to pay taxes.

When Musk held a 9.2% stake in the microblogging platform earlier this year, he started another twitter poll asking people if they like the Edit button or not, and the majority favored it.

In the most recent changes to the platform, Twitter unveiled a new policy prohibiting the free promotion of specific other social media platforms.

Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and a few other key executives after taking Twitter private in October. He also slashed roughly half of the company’s workforce as well as many of its contractors.

Tesla investors have been extremely critical of Musk’s decision to devote more time to Twitter than Tesla, which has led to the luxury car maker’s share price to more than halve in 2022
