GIS intercepts alleged cocoa smuggling operation in Volta Region
The Kpando Municipal Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) reportedly intercepted three trucks suspected of smuggling cocoa beans at Kpando Torkor in the Volta Region.
The vehicles, identified by their registration numbers as GE 1782-U, AS 7907-22, and GT 5932-12, were stopped between 0040 and 0400 hours on Friday, April 12.
Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, the Head of Public Affairs for GIS, revealed that the interception was made possible by the deployment of Officer-in-Charge DSI Peter Austin Hall and a team of officers based on intelligence received.
They observed a boat suspected to be carrying cocoa beans from the Afram Plains, unloading its cargo into the trucks near the landing site at Kpando Torkor.
The officers covertly monitored the offloading process, suspecting that the beans were intended for smuggling through an unauthorized route from Wli to Togo.
Three individuals named Wahab Abdulai, Nicholas Agbesi, and Fodume, all aged 42, were arrested in connection with the incident.
The suspects and the trucks were subsequently handed over to the Kpando Police for further investigation.
Superintendent Amoako-Atta reiterated GIS’s commitment to border protection and preventing cross-border crimes.
He commended the cooperation of border residents and the public in providing valuable information and encouraged citizens to continue reporting suspicious activities to GIS and other security agencies, aligning with the “See Something, Say Something” campaign.
