Kenya Rights Group Calls for Apology from King Charles III Over Colonial Abuses

King Charles

The Kenya Human Rights Commission, an NGO, has called on King Charles III to issue an apology for the abuses committed by Britain during the colonial era.

King Charles is embarking on a four-day visit to Kenya, during which he has expressed his intention to learn more about the injustices people suffered in the past.

One of the most significant events during the colonial era was the suppression of a pro-independence movement in the 1950s, resulting in the death of over 10,000 people, with 1,000 individuals hanged after summary trials.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission has insisted on an “unequivocal public apology” from the king during his visit.

A decade ago, the British government formally acknowledged the occurrence of torture by colonial administrators and expressed its sincere regret.

Compensation was also agreed upon for thousands of veterans of the uprising.

In addition to the demand for an apology, several Kenyan communities, including the Nandi, Kipsigis, and Pokot, are also seeking financial compensation from the UK government for historical injustices they endured during colonial rule.

These communities are also calling for the return of their traditional artifacts and ancestral lands, which were seized by the colonial regime and are still held by British entities.
