Journalists in Ghana have initiated a media blackout concerning Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson following accusations of a physical attack on a reporter reportedly carried out by her supporters.
The minister, also a Member of Parliament for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), refuted any involvement in the incident, dismissing the allegations against her as politically motivated.
The assault on the journalist, affiliated with a local radio station, occurred earlier this month during an NPP parliamentary vetting process in the Central Region.
According to Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, president of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the attackers purportedly wore T-shirts featuring Ms. Koomson’s name, prompting the call for a media blackout on her activities.
The NPP has criticized the media directive, labeling it as unjust, and asserted that none of the MP’s team members were implicated in the assault.
The party has urged the GJA to conduct a thorough investigation before making any judgments.
