On Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, a boat carrying more than 20 people, including tourists, capsized due to strong winds, resulting in the deaths of four people.

According to Italian media, the boat capsized on Sunday night between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona.

Five people were taken to the hospital, following their rescue.

The boat’s passengers reportedly included Israelis, British, and Italians, according to unconfirmed reports in Italian media.

The “very serious incident,” according to Attilio Fontana, president of the region of Lombardy, was brought on by inclement weather.

He claimed on Facebook that the 16 m (52 ft) long boat had been rented by tourists.

The boat was carrying about 25 people who were celebrating a birthday when a storm developed over the lake and later intensified into a “small hurricane,” according to Italian news sources.

Soon after the boat flipped over, it sank.

At the southern end of the lake, rescue divers, a helicopter, and several ambulances, as well as an air ambulance, sprang into action to assist with the search.

Everyone onboard fell into the water, but many people managed to swim ashore or were saved by other boats.

Shared by Italy and Switzerland, Lake Maggiore is located on the southern slope of the Alps and is a well-liked tourist destination.

Italy’s meteorological service has issued thunderstorm warnings due to the area’s unfavorable weather over the past day.
