Artificial intelligence (AI) could become more energy-efficient thanks to a prototype “brain-like” chip, according to IBM, a global leader in technology.
Emissions from the vast computer warehouses that power AI systems have drawn concerned attention.
According to IBM, its prototype could result in more effective, battery-saving AI chips for smartphones.
According to the report, parts of it function similarly to connections in human brains, which makes it more efficient.
Scientist Thanos Vasilopoulos, based at IBM’s research facility in Zurich, Switzerland, claimed that when compared to conventional computers, “the human brain is able to achieve remarkable performance while consuming little power”.
He told the media that the higher energy efficiency would allow “large and more complex workloads to be executed in low power or battery-constrained environments”, such as cars, mobile phones, and cameras.
“Additionally, cloud providers will be able to use these chips to reduce energy costs and their carbon footprint,” he added.
