Ablakwa unhappy with govt’s inaction on Akosombo Dam spillage relief

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has voiced his dissatisfaction with what he perceives as the government’s reluctance to provide relief assistance to those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Ablakwa expressed frustration, stating that the government has neglected the affected individuals, many of whom are his constituents in North Tongu.

The controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15 resulted in flooding in communities across four regions, causing significant hardship for the affected people.

During an interview, the North Tongu legislator criticized the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for not outlining measures taken by the government to alleviate the suffering of the affected people when he addressed Parliament.

Ablakwa was dissatisfied with the Minister’s defense of the Volta River Authority (VRA) for the dam’s spillage, emphasizing the necessity to protect the dam’s structural integrity and the people downstream.

Ablakwa also refuted claims of receiving relief items on behalf of his constituents from the VRA, stating, “There is this false claim that VRA is sharing relief items and MPs have received relief items. You will have constituents chasing you that, Mr. MP, we heard the Energy Minister in Parliament reveal that you guys have received the items, and you have not given them to us, you have not been transparent with us.”

He further lamented the government’s apparent lack of interest in supporting the affected people, despite a nationwide show of support from corporate organizations and individuals.
