Mothers Warned Against Inserting Things Into The Ears Of Their Toddlers

Madam Judith Agyeiwaa Donkor, National 2nd Vice-Chairperson of the Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) Nurses Group has urged mothers to desist from inserting ear wax removers and feathers into the ears of their toddlers in an attempt to remove dirt from their ears since it may damage the eardrum and leads to hearing loss.

She also implored pregnant mothers to take their medications seriously, report to hospital promptly and eat well balanced meals during pregnancy.

She further cautioned against the habit of inserting ear wax removers, matches sticks, broom sticks and feathers among others into the ear to avoid hearing loss.

She enlightened that inserting such items into the ear damages the protection for the eardrum, the wax in our ears which we see as dirt.

Madam Donkor who is also the Regional Secretary of the Western Regional ENT Nurses Group added that the wax serves as a protection by preventing dirt from entering the eardrum and thus protects it from damage which would eventually lead to hearing loss.

Headphones

She gave the advice in an interview with Spice News at a free screening exercise organized for children at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital (ENRH) as part of activities marking the World Hearing Day which was marked recently.

She emphasized that loud noise headphones should be used instead of earphones which have the tendency to damage the eardrum whereas the ear should not be so close to the sound whilst volume should not exceed 60%.

Madam Donkor further cautioned people who work around areas such as construction sites, corn milling, saw milling and mining sites to use ear plugs to protect the eardrum.
