Murmansk region Governor Andrei Chibis made a public appearance in a hospital video after surviving a knife attack that occurred following a meeting with residents in the town of Apatity.

The assailant, still unidentified, stabbed Chibis in the stomach.

Chibis underwent surgery, and his condition was described as “difficult” by the regional health chief. Fortunately, his aorta was not affected by the attack, according to the hospital’s head doctor, who remarked that the governor was “very lucky.”

In a video shared on Telegram, Chibis expressed his determination to recover and continue his work, stating, “I’m going to recover now and then continue fighting.”

Details regarding the timeline of Chibis’s recovery were not provided by his spokesperson.

However, she confirmed that the governor survived the attack and was receiving medical care.

An unidentified man was detained on suspicion of attempting to assassinate Chibis.

The man allegedly confessed during interrogation, citing personal dislike for the governor as the motive for the attack.

The suspect, identified as Alexander Bydanov, a 42-year-old local railway worker, had his electronic devices seized during a search of his apartment in Apatity.

While armed attacks on public officials are rare in Russia, this incident underscores the potential risks faced by individuals in positions of authority.
