WAPCo Marks a Decade of Commerical Operations in Takoradi

The West African Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has marked its 10 years of commercial operations in Takoradi, Western Region.

The celebration is under the theme; Celebrating 10 years of ‘Driving Regional Energy’ in the gas production sector.

Delivering his keynote address, the Western Regional Minister being the special guest of honour for the ceremony commended WAPCo for producing, transporting, and distributing gas to parts of the country and other neighbouring countries.

 He, however, lauded the company for overcoming the hurdles associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Darko Mensah noted that the contributions of WAPCo cannot be overlooked.

He mentioned that finishing the Takoradi -Tema Interconnection Program (TTIP) connection with the Government of Ghana and other partners ensures that the Western Region is now transported to the Tema Power enclave and cannot be downplayed.

He retreitrated that “the Western Region is grateful for this achievement and having its share of the national cake.”

Mr Darko Mensah, charged the company to train more indigenous to become capable of occupying important positions in the company.

“I believe that the mutual benefit will be sustained. I expect that in the not too distant future, your output will intensify the employment prospect for local communities by periodically employing more than 100 plus people in your operation… sic… And with this, I want you to start training them now so that when you need them, become fit for your purpose.

He believes that such a move by the company will reduce unemployment, where several professionals will contribute to the development of local communities.

Touching on some achievements of WAPCo, Mr Okyere Darko mentioned that, through the educational scheme, most young people have had the opportunity to make their dreams a reality.

He mentioned communities like Dwomo, Shama, Abuesi, Lower Inchaban and Aboadze being beneficiaries of WAPCo’s educational projects in the Shama District.

Delivering his address, the Managing Director of WAPCo, Mr Gregory Germani remarked that, collaborations with shareholders and key stakeholders have helped the company to achieve the milestones.

He resorted that WAGP is the fulfilment of an Economic Community Of West African State (ECOWAS) vision to acquire a gas pipeline across the West African sub-region.

“As we celebrate over 15 years of existence as a company and 10 years of commercial operations, it is important to remind you that WAGP is the fulfilment of an ECOWAS vision to have a gas pipeline across the West African sub-region.

This dream was to promote economic integration among member states,” he stated.

Mr Germani added that the completion of the Takoradi to Tema Interconnection Project (TTIP), has increased the demand for delivery across stations in Tema, Lomé, and Cotonou.

“The completion of TTIP, the combination of gas supply from both Nigeria and Ghana and the growing demand across our delivery in Tema, Lomé, and Cotonou,” he stressed.

The ceremony was graced by the Westen Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, Member of Parliament for Shama Samuel Erickson Abekah, District Chief Executive for Shama Electoral Area, Representatives from ENI Ghana, GNPC, Ghana Gas, Traditional leaders amongst others.

As part of the celebration, there was an unveiling of a special monument in honour of Takoradi to the Tema Interconnection Project by the Regional Minister, Okyere Darko Mensah.
