The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), an annual music awards ceremony in Ghana which was launched in 1999 by local event planner CharterHouse, to honor the “outstanding contributions of Ghanaian musicians to the growth and expansion of its associated industry,” has officially opened nominations for the 10th edition of the Unsung Initiative for the year 2023.

In 2014, the awards program included a new category called the Unsung Initiative with the express intention of providing up-and-coming artists with a chance to break through.

The PRO of Charterhouse, Robert Klah who spoke in an interview with Macall Mensah, the host of the evening show the Compound House on Beach 105.5 FM, acknowledged that becoming a signed artist in the country comes with it’s slippery slopes as it is not all roses in the music industry considering the fact that there is always a 50/50 chance of success.

In encouraging upcoming artist who have belief in the works they have done, and are “observing all the protocols” to be in the spotlight of a reigning artist in the country, the PRO gave pointers that people under the unsung category should ” have your fan base to tag you to make you visible “.

He acclaimed that artists in this category have encountered difficulty in their pursuance for success and breaking through and are therefore seeking to use the VGMA platform to achieve their objectives

According to him, “encouragement should go to everybody in any region who is looking for an opportunity to have the spotlight shown on them”.

In this year’s 24th edition of the VGMAs, the winner under the Unsung Initiative stands to have the opportunity to perform live on the Vodafone Ghana music awards stage, the biggest stage in entertainment, to further boost their music careers.

“This whole project is done to be able to give you a push onto that particular stage” the PRO said.

Some of Ghana’s most well-known artists have seen their careers take off thanks to the unsung intiative

Being given an opportunity and a boost to be on the stage of the VGMA and also to be recognized nationwide could perhaps be the steppingstone for an unsung artist be become the “next big thing” in Ghana.
