Several missing after cargo ships collide in North Sea, officials say

A collision between two cargo ships off the North Sea coast of Germany has led to the disappearance of several individuals, according to German authorities.

The incident involved the British-flagged Verity and the Bahamian Polesie, occurring around 5:00 local time (3:00 GMT) on Tuesday.

The Verity is believed to have sunk as a result of the collision.

At least one person has been rescued, and search teams are actively looking for the missing individuals.

The Verity was en route from Bremen, Germany, to Immingham, UK, while the Polesie had departed from Hamburg and was bound for La Coruña, Spain.

 The collision took place off the coast of Heligoland, a German archipelago within the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Various rescue assets, including two sea rescue cruisers from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS), a German navy helicopter, and a water police boat, are involved in the search efforts.

Additionally, a nearby cruise ship is offering assistance, and survivors are receiving medical care.

The exact cause of the collision remains unclear at this time.
