Assin North, Kumawu by-elections reveals EC’s efficiency – Jean Mensa

Mensa

Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has emphasized that political parties should refrain from criticizing the election management body when the outcome of polls does not align with their expectations.

She cited the recent by-elections in the Kumawu and Assin North constituencies as examples that showcased the transparency, robustness, and integrity of the systems implemented by the commission for the 2020 elections.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, Mrs. Mensa stated that although the general elections do not provide individuals with the opportunity to scrutinize the systems directly, it is crucial to focus on the polling stations and appreciate the work of the EC.

She addressed allegations of figures being manipulated at the EC headquarters to favor certain parties, urging an end to such claims. Mrs. Mensa emphasized that the credibility and transparency of the elections were evident for all to see, including party agents.

Mrs. Mensa highlighted the orderly conduct and early start of the Kumawu and Assin North polls, with all polling stations open by 7 a.m. She praised the competent and well-trained professional staff who manned the polling stations and the efficiency of the Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) in swiftly verifying voters and reducing queue times.

By 1 p.m. on voting day, a majority of the polling stations had recorded a 60 percent turnout, and the collation processes were conducted openly, transparently, and in a timely manner. She concluded that the overall process was credible, fair, and transparent.

Mrs. Mensa called upon stakeholders to accept election results when they do not favor them and to avoid vilifying the elections management body. She reiterated that the processes were transparent and credible, urging parties to accept victories and defeats with fairness and integrity.
