World’s First “Robot Lawyer” To Defend Human in Court in February
The “world’s first robot lawyer” will represent a client in court next month. According to reports, the legal assistant using artificial intelligence (AI) will aid the defendant in fighting a traffic violation.
A startup company called “DoNotPay” developed the AI robot. It will be smartphone-based and take in all court proceedings live.
The robot will use headphones to direct the defendant’s statements, much like a human attorney might.
In 2015, Joshua Browder created DoNotPay, a chatbot for legal services. The company asserts that it is now “home” to the “world’s first robot lawyer.”
It was introduced as a chatbot to offer legal guidance to customers facing late fees or fines.
According to Browder, it took a while to teach the AI assistant about the new case.
February is the scheduled date for the hearing. The actual date, the venue of the court, and the name of the defendant are still being kept a secret by the robot’s creators.
The defendant in the case, who will only speaks when directed to do so by the AI robot, is disputing the validity of a speeding ticket that was issued against him.
According to science and technology publications, the AI robot will process and analyze the evidence presented in court and then advise the defendant on how to respond.
Joshua Browder claims that DoNoPay has agreed to pay any fines if they lose the lawsuit.
In order to “fight corporations, beat bureaucracy, and sue anyone at the press of a button,” the company aims to help people.
