Dr. Bawumia is the very one who can break the ‘8′ -Hawa Koomson throws weight behind VP

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has thrown her support behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the ideal candidate to break Ghana’s longstanding 8-year cycle of alternating political power.

In an interview on Accra-based Citi TV, Madam Hawa Koomson asserted that Dr. Bawumia possesses the unique ability to narrate the government’s accomplishments and articulate why the NPP deserves re-election in 2024.

“Dr. Bawumia is the very one who can break the ‘8’,” she said. “He has worked with President Akufo-Addo for the past eight years. He knows where we started from and where we are now. So he has a story to tell. Apart from Dr. Bawumia, nobody can tell the story of the government, and that is why we are all supporting him.”

Mavis Hawa Koomson also dismissed the notion that Dr. Bawumia merely serves as a figurehead in the government, emphasizing that he possesses the autonomy to make independent decisions when in a leadership role.

“If you say he’s part of the government, yes, but he’s only a vice, he’s supporting the president,” she said, adding “He has no say. When the president is not there, Dr Bawumia cannot chair cabinet meetings, or sign any documents unless the president asks him to do it on his behalf. So when he’s in charge, he can make decisions on his own.”

She went on to predict a substantial victory for Dr. Bawumia in the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for November. She cited his widespread popularity, extensive experience, and robust grassroots support as key factors that position him as the frontrunner in the race.

The NPP, which has held power since 2017, faces the challenge of selecting its flagbearer for the 2024 elections on November 4.

Aside from Dr. Bawumia, the other three aspirants in the race include Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central MP; Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the former Minister for Agriculture; and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The party’s current term is set to conclude in 2024.
