Three school children dead within a week after drowning in a river

In the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region, three school children tragically lost their lives within a span of just one week due to drowning while attempting to cross the Mankra River on their way to school.

The unfortunate incident occurred at a location where a makeshift log had been placed to assist commuters, including school children, in crossing the river. On Monday, September 4, 2023, two pupils drowned in the river, following a similar incident that claimed the life of a junior high school student on August 31, 2023.

After traditional authorities in the area performed customary rituals, the bodies of the victims were recovered and taken to the morgue. Joseph Frimpong Bonsu, the District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South West, confirmed the incident and mentioned that efforts are underway to construct a footbridge to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.

“We had a makeshift log that we used to cross the river, but the children lived in a certain village and they were coming to school. When they got to the river, they fell from the log into the water. The bodies are at the mortuary and we have made contact with the families. We are having a meeting today and we have taken measures to ensure that this incident does not happen again,” he stated.
