Democratic Republic of Congo appoints first female prime minister
Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi has made history by appointing the country’s first female prime minister, Judith Suminwa.
This appointment comes after weeks of uncertainty following Tshisekedi’s inauguration for a second term in January, which initiated a search for a majority coalition in the National Assembly before a prime minister could be named and a government formed.
Suminwa expressed her awareness of the significant responsibility that comes with her new role, pledging to work towards peace and the development of the country.
The Democratic Republic of Congo faces numerous challenges, including escalating conflict and a humanitarian crisis in eastern regions, as well as the management of its vast mineral wealth.
During his first term, President Tshisekedi vowed to combat corruption, revive the economy, address inequalities, and tackle insecurity in the eastern part of the country.
However, critics argue that he fell short on these promises.
