GBA

Mrs. Efua Ghartey has made history by becoming the first woman to be elected president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). The election took place during the GBA Congress in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 11, marking a significant moment in the Association’s history.

Mrs. Ghartey secured 1,278 votes, defeating her closest competitor, Agbesi Dzakpasu, who garnered 1,060 votes.

Her victory is seen as a transformative development for the GBA, expected to bring fresh leadership and perspectives to Ghana’s legal profession.

With over 30 years of legal experience and a longstanding record of service to the GBA, Mrs. Ghartey had run for the position of national president twice before, narrowly losing to former presidents Tony Forson and Yaw Boafo by slim margins of 67 and 65 votes, respectively.

Her determination over the last six years to lead the GBA has now been realized with this historic election.

In the race for Vice President, Victoria Barth won with 1,624 votes, defeating Ebenezer Kwaitoo, who received 495 votes. Ms. Barth is a highly regarded legal professional known for her work at the Ghana School of Law, where she has mentored many young lawyers.
