Teacher Unions threaten strike over delay in book and research allowance

Three major teacher unions in Ghana, which are the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), have warned that they will go on strike if the government fails to begin payment of their Book and Research Allowance (BRA) by 13th June 2025.
In a joint press release dated 9th June 2025, the unions said they are unhappy about the government’s delay in releasing the exchange rate needed to process the Book and Research Allowance (BRA) payments.
They stated that the delay has caused uncertainty and frustration among their members, who depend on the allowance for academic work and research.
The unions held a joint meeting on 8th June 2025, where they resolved that they would not accept any further extension of payments beyond September 2025. They emphasised that the allowance is a legal entitlement under their Conditions of Service and is important for improving research, teaching, and knowledge sharing.
They also warned that if the government does not take urgent action by 13th June 2025, a strike notice would be sent to all campuses. They urged the government to act quickly to prevent disruption of the academic calendar and ensure that the welfare of teachers and the academic community is protected.
The statement was jointly signed by Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu and Prof. Eliasu Mumuni of UTAG; Prof. Uriah S. Tetteh and Mr. Samuel Jabez Arkaifie of TUTAG; and Mr. Maxwell Bunu and Mr. Fidelis Kamayai of CETAG, representing the collective interests of their members across universities, technical universities, and colleges of education nationwide.
