Ghana Fire Service rescues man attempting suicide due to inability to afford kidney treatment

Personnel from the Fire Service rescued a man in his early 50s who allegedly attempted suicide in Adjei Kojo, near Ashaiman in Accra.

Personnel from the Ashaiman branch of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rescued a man in his early 50s who allegedly attempted suicide on Tuesday, August 20, in Adjei Kojo, a community within the Tema West Municipality near Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

The man, reportedly suffering from kidney disease, climbed an electric pylon in a desperate bid to end his life, unable to cope with the financial burden of his treatment. According to sources, he had been battling the illness and had reached a point of despair because he could not afford his medication.

Recounting his ordeal to GNFS personnel and eyewitnesses, the man explained, “When I was diagnosed with the disease, I first went to the Ashaiman Polyclinic, and they referred me to Tema General Hospital. From there, I was directed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). I have been going from one hospital to another, but I’m exhausted. I wanted to seek treatment at UGMC, but they told me I wouldn’t be able to afford the bills.”

In a compassionate gesture, the GNFS personnel assured the man of their support, pledging to assist him in covering the costs of his kidney treatment.
