Senegal opposition leader Ousmane Sonko regains consciousness after falling into coma

Sonko

Ousmane Sonko, a detained Senegalese opposition leader who had been on a hunger strike, has regained consciousness after falling into a coma on Monday, as confirmed by one of his lawyers, Juan Bronco.

However, Sonko remains in a critical condition and is extremely weak.

Over the past two years, Sonko has been embroiled in a series of legal challenges.

In June, he faced a trial for rape, but after being acquitted of that charge, he was sentenced to a two-year prison term for “corrupting youth.”

The court found him to have acted immorally toward an individual under 21, based on allegations from a massage therapist.

In July, he was arrested and detained on multiple charges, including incitement to insurrection.

Additionally, his political party, the Patriots of Senegal, was dissolved.

Sonko has consistently claimed that the charges against him and his supporters are politically motivated with the aim of preventing him from running in the upcoming presidential election next year, an assertion denied by the authorities.

Mr. Bronco mentioned that his client had initiated two hunger strikes to demand his release, but these had left him severely weakened.

Sonko will continue to receive medical attention, and his ability to maintain consciousness remains uncertain, as Mr. Bronco had previously indicated earlier this week.
