W/R: Committee delays report on Anto-Aboso explosion, seeks extension

The nine-member investigative committee, appointed by the Western Regional Coordinating Council to probe the quarry explosives disaster that occurred on September 9, 2023, in the Kobina-Andoh-Anto-Aboso area of the Shama District, has failed to meet its mandated deadline for submitting its findings.

The committee, established on September 11, 2023, was tasked with investigating the cause of the incident at the Chinese-owned STA Addsams (OMNI) quarry site, which resulted in the loss of six lives.

Their mission also included examining the permitting status of the quarry operations and proposing measures to prevent similar occurrences.

Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah has confirmed that the committee has requested a one-week extension to finalize its work and present the report, which was originally due within three weeks.

“They have not fished their work. They have come to ask for an extension to do some extra work in some of the communities. So I am hoping that next week Tuesday, they will present it [the Anto-Aboso report],” he said.
