The Ghana Bauxite Company Limited, located in Awaso in the Western North Region, has announced plans to build a bauxite refinery, marking a major step forward in the company’s drive for value addition.
The announcement was made by the company’s general manager, Alexander Gyedu, during the official opening of the Community Relations Office at Awaso.
Mr. Gyedu stated that the new refinery will play a key role in enhancing the company’s operations and driving the growth of Ghana’s economy.
The refinery will process raw bauxite into alumina, a vital material in aluminum production. This will not only increase the value of the company’s output but also reduce its dependence on foreign refineries.
By refining bauxite locally, the company aims to generate more revenue and create employment opportunities for the local community.
Western North Regional Minister Wilbert Petty Brentum, has stated that the bauxite refinery initiative will not only enhance the efficiency of the Ghana Bauxite Company but also generate more employment opportunities for the people of Awaso and surrounding communities.
He emphasized that the government’s support for the project is part of its broader strategy to develop an integrated aluminum industry in Ghana. By leveraging local bauxite deposits, the initiative aims to reduce the importation of alumina and boost local industries.
Mr. Brentum added that the construction of the refinery will have a positive impact on the local economy, creating jobs and fostering economic growth.
He further highlighted that the government’s backing of the project underscores its commitment to promoting economic development and adding value to the country’s natural resources.
The regional minister also praised the company’s management for their significant investments in improving operational performance.
“Since Ofori-Poku Company Limited took over from foreign operators three years ago, the company has demonstrated remarkable growth and efficiency,” he added.
