VGMA Unsung

The Unsung Initiative, a move by local event planner CharterHouse, which seeks to give upcoming artists a chance to break through in the music industry, has been instigated for this years 24th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).

Coming down to the coasts of the Western Region, “who breaks the barrier”, a burning question being asked by all, will come down to whether the artists qualify in terms of the criteria being used in the selection of nominees for the unsung category.

The intiative which is open to everyone from different parts of the country to stand a chance to get nominated for this 2023 Unsung Category is based solely on social media tags, where the entrants are expected to have their fans post their pictures and tag them which eventually lead to the acts with the most tags to get nominated in this year’s Unsung initiative.

For the most part, for upcoming artists to be able to get more tags to make them visible, the artists’ works must speak for them.

The entertainment journalist at Empire FM, Hertilicious, who spoke in an interview with Macall Mensah, the host of the Compound House on Beach 105.5 FM, acclaimed that even if Western Region puts all their support into a new artist, “your support can’t do any magic”, considering the fact that being selected into the category is not by vote.

Hertilicious stated clearly “It will be difficult for an Artiste from the Western Region to be nominated for 2023 VGMA Unsung”

She asserted that artists must work to leave a mark and lauded the works of Aya Ramzy B, Western region’s upcoming artist whose works have put him on the spotlight.

She believes Aya Ramzy B “can do the job when he is selected” and tick all the boxes with regards to the Unsung selection criteria.

The entertainment journalist also admonished that if “he hasn’t really worked to leave a mark, it doesn’t make any point” in competing in the Unsung Initiative.

The nominees will have the exceptional opportunity to perform at the VGMA in front of a live audience of more than 20,000, as is done each year.

The people of Western Region, according to Herty, need to play a role in giving full support to whoever is chosen from the Region
