Family of deceased Taxi driver in Sekondi suspects foul play; Calls on IGP for Justice

Family members of the late Joseph Entsie, who was allegedly murdered in custody at the Sekondi Police Station on December 25, 2021 is demanding justice from Ghana Police Service

The deceased until his demise was a taxi driver at the Fijai Taxi Station in Sekondi.

Kwame Appiah, a brother to the deceased (Joseph Entsie), addressing the media in a joint press conference by family and colleagues at Fijai Taxi Rank narrated that the Police is concealing the cause of his brother’s death and thus given the police an ultimatum to release the postmortem results.

According to Kwame Appiah, his brother (Joseph Entsie) was arrested on December 25, 2021 on the premise that, he had knocked down a Policeman at the Effia Nkwanta Nurses Quarters in Sekondi.

Joseph Entsie was taken to the Sekondi Police custody whilst the said Policeman was also carried to the hospital for treatment.

Kwame Appiah stated that the Police carried out a postmortem on the dead body without the consent of the family

For his part the Assembly man of Sekondi Asafo Electoral Area, Sampson K. Darko mentioned that the Police has not been forth right with the truth because after the first postmortem, it was revealed that Joseph Entise was beaten to death. According to him, the Police claims that Joseph Entsie hanged himself with his jeans trousers in the cells.

The family’s refusal to be part of the second postmortem was as a result of Police denying them of the outcome of the first postmortem.

“The family requested for the result of the first postmortem and they were told, they can’t have it because the investigator has gone out of the office. At the same time, the Police requested the presence of the family for the second postmortem and the family refused because the result of the first test wasn’t known to them. This should not be tolerated in any republic that is why we are calling on the IGP to step into this matter for the whole truth to be revealed,” he said.

The Police however went ahead to conduct another postmortem without the permission of the family.

Mr. Sampson Darko stated, there were eye witnesses who saw how the Police beat up the deceased on the scene before taken to the Police station.

Meanwhile, results from the Pathologist revealed that Joseph Entsie was not drunk but was beaten and nothing showed he committed suicide whilst in cells as being reported by the Police.

The Assembly woman for Fijai, Ramatu Ibrahim, reiterated that she is worried about the whole situation because the Police is not being truthful. She has however, pleaded with the Police to release the result from the first postmortem.

“The family is on my neck day and night, blaming me for leading the Police to deposit the body of their family member to the morgue. All I’m demanding is the result of the first postmortem. The whole community is demanding justice for Joseph Entsie,” she said.
