Energy Minister refutes claims of ECG sale, calls for private sector support in revenue operations

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Jinapor, has dismissed reports suggesting that the Mahama-led administration plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series forum on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Mr. Jinapor clarified that the government has no intention of selling ECG. Instead, it is exploring private sector participation in specific areas—particularly billing and revenue collection—to improve operational efficiency.

“We are not selling ECG,” he emphasized. “What we are doing is involving the private sector in billing and collection processes to enhance efficiency and service delivery.”

The Minister encouraged Ghanaian entrepreneurs, businesspeople, and investment groups to seize this opportunity and play an active role in modernizing Ghana’s power distribution sector.

“We have capable Ghanaian entrepreneurs. This is your opportunity—get involved and support improvements in this critical sector,” he urged.
