Mahama’s Decision To Contest For 2024 Presidency Was Expected – Governance Expert
Governance Expert, Professor Emmanuel Asiamah has stated that Former President John Mahama’s decision to run for the Presidency in 2024 was expected.
He says John Mahama as a Former President brings on board some experiences which will enhance his chances at the primaries to run on the ticket of the NDC in the Presidential elections.
Professor Asiamah adds that Former President Mahama is a formidable candidate and his performance during the 2020 elections will make him a marketable candidate who can cause an upset in the 2024 elections.
“If you look at his posture, his public address addressing issues regarding governance and also becoming a flag bearer before coming to board again it will augur will for NDC and the needful chances that they stand to win the power. They settle score. He has marketed himself than the others. He has the followers. He has admirers. Because he has done it before he can be able to criticise the government as to the things that the government is doing or have done.” He said.
Touching on calls by some members of the party to endorse Mr. Mahama as Flagbearer, Professor Asiamah noted that though such calls are not misplaced it doesn’t support democracy.
He said ,” That call is not out of place except that Ghana is championing a true democratic process. If you look at all the people who have also come to say that they are going to contest, the track record of Mahama stands tall. I mean, I will be surprised if his Excellency Former President Mahama goes into this contest and don’t get at least 90 percent. In order to strengthen democracy, I think that we must test the score within the democratic process. If the others come on board and say we want him to go alone that will be fair. “
He, however, projected that Mr. Mahama could secure at least 90 percent votes in the Presidential primaries.
