Kompany Retires As Player To Concentrate On Anderlecht Coach Job

Vincent Kompany is retiring as a player and has signed a new contract as coach of Anderlecht, the Belgian club announced on Monday.

The 34-year-old has extended his deal by four years.

“I want to fully commit to my role as a coach and need 100 per cent of my time and focus for it,” Kompany was quoted as saying in the club’s press release. “That’s why I’m quitting as a football player. Our ambition and our hunger remains the same.”

The centre back started his coaching career last year when he became Anderlecht player-coach. The former Belgium defender previously captained Manchester City, who were quick to send their best wishes.

“There won’t be another like him! Best of luck on your retirement from football, @VincentKompany,” City tweeted. Kompany won four Premier League titles with the team.
