Seven Ghanaians and a Chinese Reportedly Missing Following The Sinking of Fishing Vessel.

Seven Ghanaians and one Chinese are said to be unaccounted for following the sinking of a fishing vessel, MV Comforter 2 along the coast of Elmina.

The vessel had a total crew of 25 comprising 19 Ghanaians and 6 Chinese.

Reports from the survivors indicates that, the vessel had caught a lot of fish and in the process of hauling the net aboard, the vessel tilted which was also aided by strong currents leading it to sink.

Unofficial information has it that, 7 Ghanaians and one Chinese are still missing.

The Ghana Maritime Authority, GMA is yet to issue a statement to this effect.

Speaking to the media this morning, the Public Relations Officer for 2Garrison, Enoch Tetteh Opata spoke on the issue.

“We got the information that a vessel has sank so we rushed to the scene. Our interaction with the natives there indicate that the vessel was sighted on the sea on Saturday between the hours of 4am – 4:30pm. The exact location was 46 nautical miles south of Saltpond.

They had a bumper harvest and as they were hauling the net, the boat balanced. The sailors drew to the attention of the captain, but he urged them to continue hauling thus leading to the sinking of the boat.

Our investigations reveals there were 25 crew with 19 Ghanaians and 6 Chinese nationals.” he said.

Mr Opata disclosed that they’ve been able to rescue 16 crew members with12 being Ghanaians and the rest Chinese. One of the rescued is, however, dead.

He noted that currently 7 Ghanaians and 1 Chinese are still unaccounted for.
