Employment Minister To Meet 3 Teacher Unions Over New GES Boss

The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is expected to meet with 3 Teacher Unions threatening to embark on a strike following the appointment of the new Director General of Ghana Education Service (GES) is not reversed.

Three Teacher Unions have vowed to lay down their tools on the appointment of Dr Eric Nkansah as the Director General of GES.

NAGRAT, GNAT and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) are the Unions threatening strike action.

A statement signed by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah explained that the meeting scheduled for today, Friday, November, 4 is to have an advanced workable solution to the impasse.

Background to Story

Three teacher unions have declared a strike to demand the removal of the newly appointed Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Eric Nkansah.

Leadership of the three unions –National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT)–declared the strike on Friday, November 4, 2022.

This comes on the back of the expiration of an ultimatum the teacher unions gave the government to rescind its decision on Dr. Nkansah’s appointment.

Addressing the media, President of GNAT, Rev. Isaac Owusu said they will not call off the strike until government addresses their concerns.
