Niger coup leader signs order to allow in other junta troops if attacked

Tchiani

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the coup in Niger, has issued an order allowing the military governments of Mali and Burkina Faso to send troops into his nation to assist in defending against an attack.

The declaration was made following a Thursday visit by the foreign ministers of Burkina Faso and Mali, Olivia Rouamba and Abdoulaye Diop, to Gen. Tchiani in Niamey.

The democratically elected president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, was ousted by a group of army officers last month.

The West African regional bloc Ecowas has threatened to use force to restore him.

It has been attempting to negotiate with the coup leaders but has warned that if talks fail, it is prepared to send troops.
