President of the Agricultural Chamber of Commerce, Philip Abayori has said Ghana needs to expand its irrigation facilities and have data on all rice producers.
These, Mr. Abayori believes are steps needed to ensure the country is not dependent on imported rice.
He beckoned on the government to support the sector to help increase production by providing improved seedlings to rice farmers.
Speaking to the media, Mr Abayori urged large-scale farmers to employ more people to assist on farmlands.
Mr Abayori said Nigeria rather used monies that were used to support imports to invest in rice production. He observed that the government ensured that there was enough mechanisation and agro inputs for the rice farmers.
Mr Abayori also appealed to the government to increase investment to invest in capital capital-intensives in the rice value chain.
