The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a strong warning to the public against the unauthorized transfer of electricity meters, labeling the practice as illegal and punishable under the law.
According to the company, all electricity meters are registered to specific locations and cannot be relocated without formal approval. Unauthorized transfers, ECG says, disrupt billing systems, create service challenges, and may lead to legal action.
Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, explained that meter transfers are tightly regulated and only allowed under certain conditions.
“A meter issued by ECG is linked to a designated location and must not be moved—especially from immovable structures like residential buildings,” he stated.
However, ECG clarified that transfers are permitted for movable structures such as kiosks and containers, but only within the same ECG district and under official supervision.
“These transfers must be handled exclusively by ECG-authorized personnel following a formal request. Any movement of meters installed in permanent structures is strictly forbidden,” Dr. Ayiku stressed.
He further warned that individuals who relocate meters without ECG’s consent risk facing criminal charges.
“Unauthorized meter transfer is a violation of ECG policy and national regulations. We advise customers to follow the appropriate procedures,” he added.
ECG is urging the public to report any suspicious meter activities or irregularities to their nearest district office or through official communication channels.
