Court sentences Aveyime disturbance convicts; orders dissolution of group

Raphael Tettevi, Jasper Mawulolo Agudogo, and Daniel Yevugah have been convicted and sentenced in connection with the violent disturbances that occurred at Aveyime in the early hours of September 25, 2020.

The trio, along with others, were arrested after blocking roads at Juapong and Sogakope and setting two STC buses on fire. The group also launched coordinated attacks on the Aveyime and Mepe Police Stations, where they forcibly released inmates from custody and locked up police personnel on duty.

The High Court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, delivered the sentence after taking into account the period the convicts had already spent in lawful custody—nearly four years and eight months—almost equivalent to the five-year maximum sentence for their offence. In addition to time served, the court ordered each of the three convicts to pay a fine of GH₵9,600, or serve an additional 12-month prison term in default.

A fourth individual, Hope Mottey, who remains at large, was tried in absentia and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, along with a GH₵6,000 fine. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months of imprisonment.

Justice Simmons further directed all four convicts to sign a bond to be of good behaviour. The court also instructed the Registrar General to strike out the organization associated with the convicts from the list of registered entities in Ghana.
