Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor re-elected as GJA President in strong show of support

The incumbent President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, has been re-elected to lead Ghana’s inky fraternity, securing a decisive mandate from members across the country.
Mr. Dwumfuor garnered 445 votes, representing 64.49% of the total valid ballots cast, defeating his closest challenger, Mr. Charles Yao Mawusi, who polled 245 votes (35.51%). The outcome underscores the strong confidence GJA members have placed in Dwumfuor’s leadership and vision.
The national election, which saw a turnout of over 800 accredited voters from across Ghana, was marked by a competitive atmosphere. Although a late entrant to the race, Mr. Mawusi injected renewed energy into the contest, compelling the incumbent to recalibrate his strategy and rally fresh endorsements to maintain his lead.
Beyond the presidency, other key positions were also decided. Ms. Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation emerged as the new Vice President, succeeding Linda Asante of the Ghana News Agency. Ekpe triumphed over Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group, a former GJA Public Relations Officer, in a closely contested race.
For the role of Organising Secretary, Mr. Suleiman Mustapha of the Graphic Communications Group defeated Maxwell Kudakor, former chairman of the Eastern Regional chapter, to clinch the position. Meanwhile, Mr. Zadok Kwame Gyesi, also from the Graphic Communications Group, was elected as Public Affairs Officer, and Mr. Dominic Hlordzi won the race for General Secretary.
The newly elected executives will serve a three-year term, during which they are expected to spearhead crucial reforms and strengthen advocacy efforts within Ghana’s dynamic media environment.
With 12 candidates vying for six national executive roles and 49 others contesting regional offices, the 2025 GJA election cycle was one of the most keenly contested in recent memory—a testament to the vibrancy and democratic spirit within the association.
The new leadership is now tasked with advancing the GJA’s mission: championing the rights of journalists, upholding press freedom, and shaping the future of journalism in Ghana.
