Ghana in talks with Chinese EV giant GAC for local manufacturing plant – Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says Ghana’s push for stronger economic diplomacy is starting to deliver tangible outcomes, especially in forging industrial partnerships.
After leading a high-level visit to China, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that Chinese electric vehicle giant GAC Group has shown strong interest in setting up an EV manufacturing plant in Ghana.
“GAC a leading electric vehicle manufacturer has agreed to give favorable consideration to Ghana for the establishment of an EV manufacturing plant,” Ablakwa revealed.
He highlighted China’s global leadership in EV technology, noting that the country is home to seven of the world’s top ten EV brands and is widely considered to be at least a decade ahead of its competitors.
“Ghana is poised to forge strategic partnerships that leverage our lithium discovery and economic recovery efforts for transformation and massive job creation,” the Minister added.

He also expressed appreciation to the board and management of GAC for their hospitality during his visit to the company’s Panyu Headquarters, describing the engagement as a significant milestone in Ghana’s industrialization agenda.
Ablakwa reaffirmed that Ghana’s renewed economic diplomacy strategy is designed to translate international cooperation into real benefits—investment, innovation, and employment—for the Ghanaian people.
