Engineer Kwame Adu-Mante on regulatory crackdown on radio stations

In a recent move, regulatory authorities shut down 64 out of over 600 radio stations for non-compliance with industry standards. This action has sparked discussions about the role of regulation in the broadcasting sector.
According to Engineer Kwame Adu-Mante, Council Member for the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) and CEO of Focus 1 Media Group, “All stations must adhere to regulatory standards and prioritize factual accuracy while maintaining a strict separation from political affiliations.”
This sentiment echoes the notion that running a radio station is a profession that requires responsibility and adherence to standards, rather than an exercise in free speech.
The shutdown could have ignited intense political debates if not for presidential intervention. As Engineer Adu-Mante further notes, “Without the president’s intervention, the shutdown of these radio stations would have sparked intense political debates and discussions.”
Despite the controversy, the fact that the majority of radio stations (536+) were not affected suggests the law is working to ensure most stations adhere to regulations. Out of over 600 radio stations, only 64 were found to be non-compliant.
However, some critics argue that regulatory matters should be handled independently to prevent accusations of politicisation.
As Engineer Adu-Mante emphasizes, “For transparency and credibility, the NCA should handle regulatory matters independently, free from ministerial influence, to prevent accusations of politicisation.”
The debate highlights the delicate balance between regulation and freedom of expression in the broadcasting sector. As the industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how regulatory authorities will navigate these complex issues.
The interview took place on Spice FM’s morning show, Adzekyemunsem, hosted by Obeng Darko.
