New fuel levy worse than e-Levy—Kennedy Osei Nyarko

The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has strongly criticized the government’s newly introduced fuel levy, describing it as a heavy financial burden on ordinary Ghanaians.

He compared it unfavorably to the widely criticized E-Levy rolled out during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

In a Facebook post, the MP argued that despite maintaining a stable power supply for nearly nine years, the NPP never imposed a “dumsor levy” on Ghanaians, even amid the high cost of energy production.

“I keep saying that vindication is in the womb of time. We always act hysterically,” Nyarko wrote.

He disclosed that Ghana consumed about 5.8 billion litres of fuel in 2024 alone. With the new levy set at GHS1.00 per litre, he estimated the government could rake in approximately GHS5.8 billion—nearly triple the revenue generated from the controversial E-Levy.

“For every GHS100.00 spent on fuel, Ghanaians will now pay an additional GHS36.00 in levies,” he said. “This is far worse than the E-Levy they crucified the NPP over.”

Nyarko’s remarks come amid growing public backlash over the fuel levy, with widespread concerns that it will trigger hikes in transport fares, escalate the cost of goods and services, and deepen the financial strain on households.
