GTEC to take legal action against users of honorary doctorate titles

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) said it will take legal action against individuals who use the honorary doctorate titles in public engagements.

“From now onwards, in addition to naming and shaming, individuals who would be found to have outed the GTEC directives will have a legal action taken against them,” a statement signed by Professor Augustine Ocloo, the Acting Deputy-Director of GTEC, said on Monday.

“The GTEC would like to send its final caution to the public to note that henceforth, citizens with honorary doctorates and professorships should cease the use of the titles in public,” it said.

The statement, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the notice went especially to politicians, businessmen and businesswomen, men and women of God, to desist from officially using the honorary doctorate and professorship titles in their dealings. Such practice, it said, was unethical and tended to dilute the integrity of the higher education system.

“The act also affects the value of true doctoral education and promotion of the professorial system in the universities,” the statement added.
